Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti (born March 27, 1954 in Belo Horizonte ) is a Brazilian diplomat and has been Head of Cabinet of UN Secretary General António Guterres since 2016 .

Career

Viotti studied economics at the Universidade de Brasília ; she received her BA in 1979 and completed her postgraduate studies in 1981. She then attended the Rio Branco Institute , the Brazilian academy for training diplomats.

Parallel to her studies, she was employed by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1976. She subsequently took on various positions there, e.g. B. as Director General for the Department of International Organizations and the Department of Human Rights and Social Issues, as Secretary General for the South America Department and also as Executive Coordinator in the Cabinet of the Foreign Minister.

From 1985 to 1989 she was First Secretary of the Brazilian Mission to the United Nations , during which time she acquired a great deal of specialist knowledge about the UN system.

Viotti worked from 1993 to 1995 as a consultant at the Brazilian embassy in the Bolivian capital La Paz .

In 1999 she returned to the Brazilian Embassy to the United Nations as Ministerial Advisor. She was vice-president of the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002 in Johannesburg and headed the Brazilian delegation in preparing for the International Conference on Financing for Development in 2002 in the Mexican Monterrey .

In January 2005 Viotti took over the post of Chargé d'affaires of the Brazilian UN mission, she was appointed Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations on January 5, 2005 by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva . Her accreditation with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon took place on July 25, 2007. In February 2011, Viotti was the rotating President of the UN Security Council . On January 16, 2013, she was replaced by Luiz Alberto Figueiredo as permanent representative and became her country's ambassador to Germany . She held this office until 2016.

From 2016, Viotti was responsible for Asia and the Pacific region in the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs , including in particular for cooperation within the framework of the BRICS countries.

At the end of 2015, Maria Luiza Viotti was proposed by Brazil as a future candidate for the post of UN Secretary-General . They emphasized their good networking in the UN system, which they had developed over decades, their important role in the stability and coordination of the various political forces in the Afghanistan conflict and their many years of work for progress in the areas of human rights and development in the poorest countries. In October 2016, the UN Security Council unanimously voted for the Portuguese candidate António Guterres . This appointed Maria Luiza Viotti as his head of cabinet in December 2016.

Private life

She is married to Eduardo Baumgratz Viotti and has one son.
