Chapel of Mary Magdalene

The Catholic Chapel Maria Magdalena is a listed church building in Niederbergstrasse , a district of Werl in the Soest district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

In the rural community of Niederbergstrasse, which at the time belonged to the parish of Westönnen , the residents had to walk to Westönnen for worship until 1872. The community leader, landowner Franz Hagen, had a chapel built on his property at his own expense . He wanted to spare the villagers the long way to church, but also to emphasize the independence of his village. Hagen declared in writing on September 30, 1872 that this chapel should be kept forever by him and his heirs in the state of construction and repair . The chapel was on 6 February 1873 by the country dean dean Eberhard Nübel benediziert .

The outer walls of the plastered brick building are structured by buttresses , the architect is not known. The nave of three rectangular yokes closes with a rectangular choir bay to the east. Later a sacristy was added to the south . On the west side of the tiled roof is a small, slated roof turret. A major renovation was carried out from 1981 to 1982.

The Hagen family transferred ownership in 1926 to the St. Josephs Association in Niederbergstrasse, which has been looking after the building since then.

Furnishing

  • In 1952 the association bought a larger wooden wall cross for the existing corpus from the 1930s.
  • The bell was electrified in 1984. The bell, tuned to b ", was cast by BW Stule in 1700.
  • The slider chest organ from the 19th century was overtaken in the twentieth century by the organ builder Werler Stockmann.
