Maria Magdalena Hofmarcher-Holzhacker (born December 1959 in Scheibbs ) is an Austrian health economist .

Life and career

Her professional career began with training as a qualified health care professional . She practiced this profession for more than ten years. At the same time, she started studying economics at the University of Vienna from 1984 , which she graduated in 1991.

She began her scientific career in 1991 at the Austrian Federal Institute for Health Care (ÖBIG) . After her postgraduate education in 1994/95 at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore , she graduated with a Master of Public Health . Back in Vienna she worked for the city of Vienna. In autumn 1996 she began her academic work at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS) in Vienna. Until 2005 and from 2008 to 2009 she was the head of HealthEcon.

From 2000 to 2001 Hofmarcher-Holzhacker worked as a consultant for the Human Development Unit for Europe and Central Asia at the World Bank in Washington .

For two years from 2005, Hofmarcher worked at the OECD in Paris , where she dealt with the efficiency of health care and the analysis of long-term care. Her research focus included applied and scientific analysis in the field of health and social services in the OECD countries.

In January 2008 she returned to the Institute for Advanced Studies to resume her work as a Senior Researcher. As an independent, non-university institution, the IHS became the first point of contact for national and international partners in the field of health economics in Austria. She established ongoing cooperation with national and international partners, such as the Main Association of Social Insurance Institutions in Austria, expanded cooperation with the World Bank , the EU Commission in Brussels and the European Observatory on Health Care Systems.

From November 2009 to 2011 Hofmarcher held the staff position for financing and international affairs in Health Austria , the national research and planning institute. From 2011 to 2013 she was the head of the Health & Care department at the European Center for Social Welfare Policy and Research in Vienna. In 2014 she founded HS&I (Health System Intelligence). Since 2015 she has been a research assistant at the Center for Public Health of the Health Economics department of the Medical University of Vienna .

Hofmarcher-Holzhacker is a regular speaker at the Forum Alpbach .
