Maria Mambo Café

Maria Mambo Café (born February 6, 1945 in Cabinda , Portuguese Congo ; † December 1, 2013 in Lisbon , Portugal ) was an Angolan economist and politician ( MPLA ).

Maria Mambo Café was born in the oil-rich province of Cabinda, which is now an exclave to Angola's national territory. After finishing school, Café studied economics in the Soviet Union . She graduated in 1968.

After their return, Café became involved in the Angolan liberation movement Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA). Until the independence of Angola in 1975, it had its headquarters in Kinshasa (Dem. Republic of the Congo). There she took on various tasks for the MPLA. She was also present in 1974/75 at the negotiations between the liberation organizations MPLA, FNLA and Unita and signed them for the organization on January 15, 1975 (" Alvor Convention ").

After Angola's independence, Café devoted itself primarily to Angolan politics and served the state in numerous different offices. Café was regarded as a loyal MPLA member who, as the MPLA's Politburo put it, “dedicated itself entirely to the Angolan cause”. 1977-78 she took over the post of Deputy Minister of Commerce. Between 1982 and 1986 she headed the department for social affairs. In 1986 she was promoted to Vice Prime Minister and also took over the department for economic affairs. In 1990, Café briefly managed the controversial Cabinda exclave as governor before she left that position in the same year.

According to media reports, she was one of the 100 richest Angolans with a fortune of more than 100 million US dollars until her death. Among other things, she was a member of various supervisory bodies of state and private companies in Angola. a. she chaired the shareholders' meeting of Bank BCI. The media also reported on spontaneous loans amounting to 10 million US dollars in favor of cafes of the Banco Espírito Santo Angola .

Café died at the age of 68 in Lisbon, Portugal. She was buried in the Alto das Cruzes cemetery in Luanda, Angola. In honor of the cafés, the new Cabinda airport is to be named “Maria Mambo Café Airport”.
