Maria Vicol

Maria Vicol , née Maria Tăitiș , (born October 17, 1935 in Bucharest , † March 13, 2015 ) was a Romanian foil fencer .

In 1956 Maria Vicol won the silver medal at the Junior World Championships as the first Romanian female fencer to win a medal at world championships. At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , Vicol won bronze in the foil individual. In 1961 she won bronze with the team at the World Championships in Turin . In 1964 at their second Olympic Games in Tokyo it was the team in fifth place, in the individual they were eliminated early. In 1965 she won silver with the team at the World Championships in Paris . At her third Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 , she won bronze with the team. In 1969 she became world champion with the team in Havana . At the 1970 World Championships in Ankara , the team won silver again.

Maria Vicol was married to rugby player Florin Vicol. She is considered the discoverer of the fencer Laura Badea .
