Laura Gabriela Badea-Cârlescu , until 1999 Laura Badea (born March 28, 1970 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian fencer . She was Olympic and European champion in 1996, world champion the year before and 1994 world champion with the team. There are also three other European titles in 1997 and 2004. Their weapon was the foil . The only female fencing Olympic champion in her country to date is a member of the Comitetul Olimpic și Sportiv Român (COSR, Olympic Committee in Romania).

Athletic career

Badea first played handball and was interested in athletics all-around . At the age of 13 she started training in fencing. Badea began her international career at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , where she won a bronze medal with the team. 1993 followed silver at the world championship in Essen, then the gold medal in 1994 in Athens. A year later she became world fencing champion in The Hague and silver medalist with the team. In 1996 she was both European and Olympic champion in Atlanta , where she defeated the Italian Valentina Vezzali . Badea was the first Romanian to win a gold medal in fencing. In the team final Romania lost to the Italians and won silver. At the Summer Games in Sydney and Athens, she was fourth and fifth.

Professional career

From 1988 to 2004 Badea served in the Romanian Army. She retired with the rank of colonel . To her 1995 sports diploma, she added another in sports management in 2007. In 2008 she received her doctorate with a thesis on sport fencing. Badea has been married to the saber fencer Adrian Cârlescu since 1999. They are parents of a daughter.
