Maria Vilardell i Viñas

Maria Vilardell i Viñas (* 1922 in Barcelona ; † March 22, 2011 ibid) was a Catalan classical pianist and music patron. She was the granddaughter of the tenor Francesc Viñas i Dordal (1863-1933) and the wife of the Barcelona pianist and music patron Miguel Lerín . Maria Vilardell is assigned to the Catalan School of Pianists .

life and work

Maria Viardell was born in Barcelona in 1922. At a young age, Maria Vilardell showed a deep empathy and understanding for classical music. Her mother often accompanied her grandfather, the tenor Francesc Viñas, on the piano at home. Maria Viardell often took him to the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, ​​where he explained the music of the operas to her. She herself was not trained in singing, but as a pianist first with the Granados student Frank Marshall and later in advanced studies with Alicia de Larrocha .

In her early pianistic phase, she performed works by Catalan and Spanish composers of the classical, romantic and contemporary era in public at home and abroad. During this time, she subordinated her career as a pianist to her role as wife and mother. When her father died in 1967, she became head of of this 1964 in memory of the great Wagner tenor Francesc Viñas founded International Singing Competition Francesc Viñas . She developed this annual event into one of the most important singing competitions in the world. In 1992 she was awarded the Creu-de-Sant-Jordi by the Generalitat de Catalunya for her achievements in this singing competition .

Vilardell made numerous radio recordings. She recorded two CDs of Catalan and Spanish piano music.
