Life

Foster grew up in Rio de Janeiro . She studied chemical engineering and chemistry at the Universidade Federal Fluminense . She then completed a master's degree in fluid mechanics and nuclear technology at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro . She also obtained a Master of Business Administration degree in economics from the private Fundação Getulio Vargas University in Rio de Janeiro.

Foster joined Petrobras as an intern at the age of 24. From 2010 onwards she worked as managing director for the largest Latin American gas and energy company Petrobras. In January 2012 she was nominated by the Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff for the chairmanship of Petrobras. Since February 13, 2012, Foster has succeeded Sergio Gabrielli as President of the Brazilian company Petrobras. She is currently the only woman to head one of the top 50 energy companies in the world, the first female chairman of an oil company and also the first woman to head Petrobras.

At the beginning of February 2015 the chairwoman of the board Maria das Graças Foster and the entire board resigned because of the so-called "Petrolão" scandal.
