August Franz Leberecht Volz ( Latvian Augusts Francs Folcs ) (born February 27, 1851 in Magdeburg , † June 20, 1926 in Riga ) was a German sculptor of Classicism and Art Nouveau .

Life

Volz was born as the son of the shoemaker Johann Andreas August Volze and Johanne Marie, nee. Morin, born in Magdeburg. In his hometown he was a student of the sculptor Habs from 1869 to 1871 . Volz studied at the Berlin Academy of the Arts , where he learned from Albert Wolff , among others . In 1866 he was one of the founders of the Association of Younger Artists Roma , from which the Corps Borussia Berlin later emerged. He was involved in the decoration of various monumental buildings, which were headed by Baurat Ende.

In 1875 Volz went to Riga. There he founded a sculpting and stonemason company, which became the largest of its kind in Riga and led the industry until his death in 1926. Stucco work as well as memorial plaques, monuments and sculptures were made. The first big order was the splendid exterior design of a private house in Wöhrmannschen Garten , today's Hotel Europa Royale Riga . Several hundred works were created under his name, most of which were exhibited in Riga. Sculptures by Volz can be found there, for example, on the gables of the Latvian National Theater and the State Art Museum. He was involved in the design of the Parliament Building ( Saeima ), the Academy of Arts and the State Bank Latvias Banka . Volz also taught modeling classes at the trade school and at the Jung-Stilling school.

Volz was also in demand as a sculptor outside the city limits of Riga. His company designed private castles in Latvia and also the German Theater ( now Eesti Draamateater ) in Tallinn .

Volz married twice in Riga, first Marie Thurm in 1882, then Olga Julie Kalning in 1911.
