During the Portuguese colonial times, the majority of Timor’s residents still belonged to the traditional Timorese faith . In addition, the Catholic faith spread . But Gomes began to preach Protestant doctrine under the influence of a Cape Verdean . After a meeting with the American pastors Edward and Rud Dilman, Gomes officially professed the Protestant faith in 1950. Together with others, Gomes founded his own religious community, from which the Christian Church of East Timor GKTT emerged in 1988 during the Indonesian occupation ( today: Protestant Church in East Timor IPTL).

While still under Portuguese rule, Gomes and her husband began to evangelize against resistance for Protestantism. From 1968 to 1978 they contributed to the renewal of local Protestantism on the island of Atauro, which belongs to East Timor . When her husband died, Gomes took over the pastor's post at the Assembleia de Deus.

In 2000/2001, Gomes was a representative of the Protestants on the National Council (NC), the country's transitional parliament. She had lived in the Assembleia de Deus church since October 1999 after her home and the homes of her six children were destroyed in the Indonesian retaliation .

Gomes died on January 7, 2020 in the Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares .
