Maria with the Child ( Madonna col Bambino ) is a painting by the Italian Renaissance painter Luca Signorelli and was created around 1492 to 1493 or from 1495 to 1498 (Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen).

The tondo is painted with tempera on limewood and has a diameter of 87 cm. The painting, which was created in the middle of the master’s creative period, was commissioned for an unknown private individual. The picture was acquired by the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen in Florence in 1984. The picture is in the permanent exhibition of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich (inventory number 7931). The work is still in its original frame today.

Image composition and motif

The image is divided vertically by Maria. In the center is the seated, monumental Mary with the standing Jesus child in a melancholy mood. A young man can be seen in the background, who is sitting on a tree stump and putting on a sandal. His posture is derived from the ancient motif of the mandrel extractor .

The picture is represented very vividly, which was achieved, among other things, through the color perspective .
