Life and work

Maria van de Loo came as the daughter of the businessman Wilhelm van de Loo (1873–1941) and his wife Johanna Clara, née. Muller, (1876–1951) to the world. Her father was a plantation director in the Dutch colony of Guiana. When he was appointed head of the West African Planting Society, the family moved to Viktoria in Cameroon in 1901 , where daughter Maria spent the first years of her childhood. Her mother's social commitment, who built up a school and an infirmary, shaped her future life. In 1909 she came to Münster and received her school education there. In 1916 she attended a household boarding school in Clausthal.

In 1921 she married the budding physician Ernst von Rudloff (1895–1944) and settled with him in Freiburg im Breisgau . In her husband's practice, she looked after the patients and the bookkeeping. Her husband's illness prompted her to train as a therapeutic gymnast at the Kohlrausch School in Freiburg. She completed her training in 1942. Her husband died two years later, and ten days later her second oldest son died in the war.

In the following years she practiced her profession. In 1953 she took over the home care of a wealthy American woman, who gave her the time and financial freedom to get involved in public life.
