Mary of Vitebsk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maria von Vitebsk († before 1349), was the first wife of Algirdas , who later became Grand Duke of Lithuania . The marriage took place around 1318. Very little is known about their life.

Life

Maria was the only child of the Russian prince Yaroslav and thus the only heir to the throne of the principality of Vitebsk . After the death of her father around 1345, Vitebsk fell permanently under the control of Algirdas and the other Gediminids .

Maria had five sons who all grew up when Algirdas was still a regional prince in the Slavic areas of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. All of her sons were baptized Orthodox . They ruled over the Russian lands and thereby contributed to the importance of prominent Russian aristocratic families such as the Trubezkoi from Dmitri von Brjansk , the Czartoryski from Konstantin, the Sanguszko from Fiodor and the Belski and Olelkowicz Słucki from Vladimir Olgerdowitsch .

After Mary's death, Algirdas married Ulyana von Tver , another Russian princess. After Algirdas' death, Mary and Uljana's eldest sons fought for the inheritance.
