Library of Congress Classification

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Library of Congress Classification (LCC) is a classification that was developed in the Library of Congress . It is used for research institutions and university libraries in the United States and several other states. Most public libraries use the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) or their own systematics instead .

The LCC was originally developed in 1897 by Herbert Putnam with the assistance of Charles Ammi Cutter , even before he took over the reins of the Library of Congress. It is influenced by the Cutter Expansive Classification, the DDC, and was created for use in the Library of Congress. The new system replaced a system introduced by Thomas Jefferson .

When Herbert Putnam retired in 1939, all subgroups except K (law) and parts of B (philosophy and religion) were essentially worked out. It has been criticized that the LCC lacks a theoretical basis; much of the basics of the classification would be tailored to the needs of the Library of Congress.

The classification system of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) uses the free letters W and partly Q. Some libraries use the system of NLM in connection with the LCC (without the letter R).
