Marian Michalik

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marian Michalik ( June 19, 1947 - March 6, 1997 ) was a Polish painter. A prize for young Polish painters created in 2001 is named after him.

Life

In 1966 Michalik graduated from the Art School in Częstochowa . In the following years he worked as a utility designer and graphic artist. It was only later that he began to be interested in painting. His works are characterized by a mysterious realism . The portrayed objects - often in connection with landscapes - are not unusual in themselves, but their combination and arrangement give rise to subtle, sometimes distant still lifes . The high proportion of dark colors and the use of light effects are strongly reminiscent of the works of the Dutch masters of the 17th century.

In 1979 he joined the Association of Polish Visual Artists ZPAP , in whose work he was actively involved. His pictures have been presented at home and abroad, for example in Japan, Monaco, Austria, Sweden, Czechoslovakia , Hungary and the USA. Michalik has received several awards in Poland and abroad - he received a gold medal at the Bielska Jesień ( Autumn in Bielsko , means Bielsko-Biała ) in 1980, a special mention at the XV. Grand Prix d'Art Contemporain in Monte Carlo in 1981 and a prize at the International Painting Biennale ( Medzinárodné bienále malby ) in Košice 1985. In 1987 he became a member of the European Academy of Art, Science and Literature in Paris .

In 1997 Michalik had a fatal accident in a car. In the following year a commemorative exhibition of his works was organized in Częstochowa. This exhibition was later also in Warsaw and on the occasion of the XVII. Festival of Polish Contemporary Painting shown in Szczecin .

All-Polish competition for pictures by young painters "Marian Michalik"

The competition (Polish: Ogólnopolski Konkurs na Obraz dla Młodych Malarzy im. Mariana Michalika ) was founded in 2001. The initiator and coordinator of the first editions was Peter Głowacki, curator at the Municipal Art Gallery in Częstochowa. Despite the increasing use and possibilities of technical means of expression in the new media, the organizers of the still young award believe in the need to promote the traditional artistic discipline of painting through such a competition. The 150 or so best works will be selected from hundreds of submitted works and presented to the public.

The previous winners of the award were Grażyna Smalej, Wojciech Kubiak, Jarosław Lewera, Małgorzata Synak-Idczak, Jacek Sztuka and Bartosz Wiłun.
