Marianne Bastid-Bruguière

Marianne Bastid-Bruguière (born November 13, 1940 in Paris ) is a French historian, geographer, sinologist and university professor.

Marianne Bastid-Bruguière is the daughter of Paul Bastid and Suzanne Bastid . Her interest in China was aroused by her mother's Chinese student who specialized in international law and was writing a dissertation on the Korean War . She first studied at the École normal supérieure , then Chinese at the Institut national des langues et civilizations orientales . From 1964 to 1965 she taught at Peking University , where she wrote her dissertation under the guidance of Shao Xunzheng on educational reforms and the introduction of a modern school system in China at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republican period .

In 1966 she began to work in various positions at the Center national de la recherche scientifique . At the same time, she taught at the Institut d'études politiques de Strasbourg , the University of Paris VII and the École des hautes études en sciences sociales . On November 12, 2001, she was elected to the Académie des sciences morales et politiques as the successor to the late René Pomeau . In 2012 she was President of this institution. In her career she has worked with numerous sinologists from American and Japanese universities. She served on the executive committee of The China Quarterly magazine for 25 years . In 2014 she was awarded the Grand Cross of the French Legion of Honor.
