Mariano Felipe Paz Soldán (born August 22, 1821 in Arequipa , Peru , † December 3, 1886 ) was a Peruvian historian and geographer.

He studied law and after some time in law he became Minister of New Granada in 1853 . On his return he drew up plans for a prison in Lima , with the support of General Ramon Castilla . In 1860 Castilla made him secretary for public affairs, which included the erection of the Simón Bolívar statue in Lima. He got involved in currency reform by taking out the deteriorating Bolivian coins.

In 1861 he published his Grand Atlas of the Republic of Peru and in 1868 the first volume of his history of Peru after its independence , which was followed by a second volume. The third, with the story up to 1839, was published posthumously by his son. In 1870 he became Minister of Justice under President José Balta , but he soon retired from public life and devoted himself to his Great Geographical Dictionary of Peru , which appeared in 1877. During the Saltpetre War , he sought refuge in Buenos Aires , where he taught as a professor at the National College and wrote the history of that war and published it in 1884.

At that time he also published 3 maps of Argentina, whose contradicting borderline in the Beagle Channel zone was rejected by the arbitral tribunal in the Beagle conflict on the following grounds: "Two volte-faces of this kind within one five-year period - for which no explanation seems to have been offered— must throw doubt on the credibility of the whole series of Paz Soldán based maps » .
