Eesti Põlevkivi AS is a subsidiary of the energy company Eesti Energia . The joint-stock company is the largest producer of oil shale in Estonia . Eesti Põlevkivi is still fully state-owned.

history

The first mention of the oil shale ( Estonian Põlevkivi , "burning stone") in the region dates back to 1725. However, it was with the industrial mining of oil shale until 1916, during the energy crisis of the First World War started. With the independence of Estonia from Russia in 1918, the state of oil shale mining also took on. The background to this was the fact that Estonia has hardly any other domestic energy sources. The Riigi Põlevkivitööstus company was founded in 1919 and the Kiviõli joint stock company in 1922 . Up to 1940 there were six state or private mining companies in Estonia, which had specialized mainly in cuckersite . After the end of World War II , the Estonian SSR experienced an upswing in oil shale mining. In 1980 over 31 million tons were extracted annually. They were mainly used to generate electricity .

Companies

The Eesti Põlevkivi company was founded in 1945 as a Soviet state company. The company's headquarters are now in Jõhvi , the capital of Ida-Virumaa County . The main activity of Eesti Põlevkivi is the surface and underground mining of oil shale in northeast Estonia. Eesti Põlevkivi extracts around 14 million tons of oil shale a year. The annual turnover is currently 1.8 billion Estonian crowns (approx. 115 million euros). With 3,500 jobs, the company is an important employer in the structurally weak, strongly Russian-speaking region. The current chairman of the board is Ilmar Jõgi (* 1958).

80% of the oil shale extracted is converted into electricity or heating, mainly at the Narva Electric Power Station . The rest is used for the production of special oils, gases or cement.
