Aidu (Lüganuse)

Aidu (German Aitz ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the Estonian district of Ida-Viru . Since October 2013 it has been in the rural community of Lüganuse ( Lüganuse vald ). Until its formation it was in the rural community of Maidla ( Maidla vald ).

Aidu was first mentioned in 1241 in the Liber Census Daniæ . The manor of Aidu with its manor house is from 1543 mentioned in documents.

One of the two large opencast mining areas for oil shale in Estonia ( Aidu karjäär ) has been located near Aidu since 1974 . It is operated by the Põlevkivi Kaevandamise AS company. The quarrying area and the recultivated areas are special destinations for ecotourism and local recreation in Estonia.
