Moor of Sirtsi

The Sirtsi bog ( Sirtsi soo ) is particularly popular with nature lovers . It covers an area of 5644 hectares. Most of the area has been under nature protection since 1981. The numerous bog eyes are characteristic of the marshland . Brown bears settle in the moorland .

An important path, the so-called Virutee , ran through the moor during the 19th century . It led from Central Estonia to Narva and on to Saint Petersburg . It was only abandoned with the construction of the railway line between the Estonian capital Tallinn and the Russian capital Saint Petersburg in the 1870s.

There is also a large boulder in the reserve . It has a diameter of 26.7 meters.

In Estonian mythology and in popular parlance, the Sirtsi moor is closely linked to stories about the Estonian legendary hero Kalevipoeg .
