Aa (Estonia)

Aa (German: Haakhof ) is a village in the Estonian district of Ida-Viru in the east of the rural community Lüganuse . The village lies on the Gulf of Finland . It has 181 inhabitants (2000).
The place Aa was first mentioned in 1241 in the Liber Census Daniae as Hazæ . Later names were Hacke, Häcke, Haka, Hakala and Haakülla . The historic manor house of Aa was built in the years 1426-1497.
In the Middle Ages, Aa / Haakhof was an estate; in the later centuries the main owners were the Wangersheimer, von Nasackin and von Gruenewaldt .
Major modifications were made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It has housed a nursing home since 1924. In addition, the Estonian reception center for asylum seekers was located in Aa until 2000 and has since been moved to Illuka .
