Tarumaa is a village ( Estonian küla ) in Ida-Viru County ( East Wierland ) in northeast Estonia . Since October 2013 it has been in the rural community of Lüganuse ( Lüganuse vald ). Until its formation it was in the rural community of Maidla ( Maidla vald ).

Description and history

The village has 8 inhabitants (as of 2000). It is a small forest settlement typical of the area. It was first mentioned in a document in 1533. Near the village, on the Kartuliaugunõmm heath, archaeologists have unearthed an underground cemetery.

Only one inhabitant of Tarumaas survived the Great Northern War and the subsequent plague epidemic at the beginning of the 18th century. His name was Tenno. All the inhabitants of the village since that time were or are descended from him.
