Varja is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Lüganuse ( Luganuse vald ). It is located in Ida-Viru County ( East Wierland ) in northeast Estonia .

Description and history

The street village has 141 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012). It is located a few meters from the Baltic Sea on the highway between the Estonian capital Tallinn and the Russian metropolis Saint Petersburg .

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1241. However, it is much older. Archaeologists have uncovered seven prehistoric cult stones in the fields .

Post office

Varya used to be known mainly for its tsarist post office on the route between Tallinn and Saint Petersburg. The main building was completed shortly after the Russian conquest of the Baltic States in 1728. There were also two guest houses as well as carriage houses, stables and granaries. The post office is still preserved today (in a modified form).
