Marie-Geneviève Bouliar (* 1762 in Paris ; † October 9, 1825 in Bois d'Arcy ) was a French classicist painter .

life and work

Marie-Geneviève Bouliar was born in Paris in 1762, the only daughter of a tailor. She trained with the leading Parisian portrait painter, Joseph Siffred Duplessis . At the major official art exhibition, the Paris Salon of 1791, she made her debut with a portrait. In the Salon of 1791 794 pictures by 298 artists were represented, 21 of them women in art . From then on until 1817 she exhibited her works of art in the salon, which were also sold quite successfully. In 1792 she won a commission of 1000 livres to get a work incentive (travail d'encouragement) based on the works she exhibited in the 1791 Salon.

The exhibitions gave her further private portrait commissions, which is why she mainly devoted herself to this genre. In addition, she created historical scenes. In 1794 she painted the picture of the ancient philosopher Aspasia , who was said to have been a hetaera . It was exhibited the following year, for which she was awarded the Prix ​​d'Encouragement (Prize of Encouragement). In addition to this history picture, mainly portraits have survived.

Marie-Geneviève Bouliar died in a castle in Bois d'Arcy in 1825.
