Marie Adams
Marie Adams , née Ollie Marie Givens (born October 19, 1925 in Linden , Texas , † February 23, 1998 in Houston ) was an American R&B singer who was active in the 1950s and 1960s. Due to her expansive appearance her nickname was "TV Mama" (alluding to the wide screen format ).
biography
In her youth, Ollie Marie Givens sang gospel in the church choir. After she had celebrated first successes in Don Robey's "Bronze Peacock Club" in Houston , she made her first recordings in 1952 with Peacock Records as Marie Adams. I'm Gonna Play the Honky Tonks , My Search Is Over, and My Song were R&B hits.
After various regional tours, Marie Adams joined Johnny Otis in 1953 , who toured the US with his show. At times she appeared with the sisters Sadie and Francine McKinley as "Three Tons of Joy" ( three tons of joy ).
