Live and act

Marie Bertha was the youngest of three children. Their ancestors, Jews of German origin, converted to the Protestant faith. The father was a structural engineer in demand around the world. Marie Bertha received the usual training for girls of her class: private tuition, attendance at a secondary school for girls and an elegant boarding school for girls. Then she led the life of a house daughter and went on many trips abroad with her mother. a. to England, Italy, France, Russia, Switzerland and again and again to Germany to visit relatives. Due to the death of their father, who had an accident while building a bridge in Sweden, the family ran into financial difficulties. Marie Coppius was now forced to provide for her own living. So she worked u. a. as an assistant in a toddler school in Poznan.

In the course of the Russian Revolution in 1905 Maria Coppius, her mother and two siblings, had to leave their homeland because of their German descent. In Kassel they found accommodation with the Froebel pedagogue Hanna Mecke , who led a kindergarten teachers' seminar. Hanna Mecke taught Marie Coppius in kindergarten and Froebel pedagogy and finally found her private student a job as an elementary kindergarten teacher in a Heidelberg kindergarten.

Marie Coppius has put down her practical experience, closely linked to Friedrich Fröbel's pedagogy , in many publications. She published for many years in the journal Kindergarten . Her work Planting and Weeding in Children's Hearts, published in 1912 and one of the standard works of kindergarten education at the time, was particularly successful . The second edition appeared just four years later, and a translation into French followed. The publication was praised with the following words:

In this booklet, an experienced and qualified educator shares from the treasure trove of experiences, mostly with the help of lively and loving descriptions of the mental life of the little ones, what supplements and deepening all mothers and educators who take the big task entrusted to them seriously of their own experiences will be most welcome. An abundance of cases, portrayed with just as much love as sometimes delicious humor, shows how the difficulties and bad habits that come to light in all children can most successfully be eliminated and what means are given in play and occupation to develop the child's good qualities .

In addition, she was still a board member of the Froebel Association from 1908 to 1910 and had been a member of the special committee for the care of babies and small children since 1921 . She also founded the Heidelberg organization of the professional organization of kindergarten teachers, after-school care workers and youth leaders . In addition, Marie Coppius was an honorary member of the American Kindergarten Teachers Association .

Until her retirement (1933), Aunt Marie , as she was called by the children and parents, worked at the Heidelberg Weststadt Kindergarten:

Her successor cited ... health considerations as the reason for her retirement, which - if you take into account her professional activity for a total of 46 years - can appear quite credible. The fact that her educational principles could hardly be reconciled with National Socialist ideas can be seen as a further reason for her resignation .

Marie Coppius withdrew from the public eye during the Nazi dictatorship. Because of her Jewish relatives, the Nazi rulers strictly forbade her to work in kindergarten and Froebel education. Failure to comply was threatened with serious consequences .

A special kindergarten in Heidelberg-Rohrbach bears her name.
