Marie Dietrich ( January 26, 1868 in Stuttgart or Weinsberg - December 14, 1939 in Berlin-Schöneweide ) was a German opera singer ( soprano ) and singing teacher .

Life

Dietrich began her singing studies with Mrs. Bader in Stuttgart and Ferdinand Jäger . Originally she wanted to be a concert singer, but when she heard the director of the court theater at the time at a concert of the commercial association in Göppingen, he invited her to an audition. Thereupon she was committed to the Hoftheater Stuttgart for three years.

She liked it there, but since she felt that her voice needed further training, she took a three-month vacation in the first year and went to Paris to receive further training with Pauline Viardot-Garcia . Since she was making good progress, she went to Paris for the second and third years.

In 1891 she made a guest appearance at the Court Opera Theater in Vienna as "Rosine", "Philine" and "Susanne" with such success that she was offered an engagement. However, she decided to go to the Hofoperntheater Berlin, which had also given her a contract.

She stayed there until 1912 (stage farewell in August 1912 as “Marie” in the armory of Lortzing). After that she worked as a concert singer and singing teacher.

She was an excellent coloratura singer, whose technical skill was particularly praised, as was the pearly light fluidity of her passages and fioritures . The voice, a soprano of considerable volume capable of modulation, was distinguished by its extremely sympathetic, touching timbre and fresh melodiousness. Her humorous roles did particularly well.

Marie Dietrich died in Berlin in 1939. Her grave, which has not been preserved, was in one of the cemeteries in front of Hallesches Tor . It is not known exactly which one.
