Marie Tonoir
Marie Caire Tonoir b. Mary Tonoir (born August 25, 1860 in Lyon , † March 12, 1934 in Jausiers ) was a French painter.
Marie Tonoir studied painting in Lyon under the direction of Joseph Guichard and Pierre Miciol. She married the painter Jean Caire in 1857 and moved with him to Paris to study together at the Académie Julian . Both spouses took part in many exhibitions. Marie Caire Tonoir received the third prize at the Salon des artistes français in 1892 .
In 1899 the couple moved to the Davis family estate near the town of Jausiers. Mary continued to paint, while Jean increasingly devoted himself to the economic development of the Ubaye Valley in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department .
The couple visited Algeria and Tunisia several times , especially the city of Biskra , where many pictures of the oriental genre were made. One of the images served as a template for a French postage stamp in 2012.
Maria became a member of the Society of French Painters-Orientalists.
