Marie de la Croix (born December 1, 1840 as Elisa Sophie Clementine Hébert in Néhou-Saint-Georges near Coutances , France ; † May 11, 1917 in Cherbourg , France) was a French religious sister and mystic .

Life

At the age of 18 she entered the convent of the Sisters of the Cross in Valognes and began her novitiate on February 3, 1859 . She was dressed on May 8, 1860, and made profession on May 15, 1861 . She learned drawing and music and became a teacher. In 1885 she was elected Mother Prefect . She held this office until the abolition of the monastery in 1904 (due to the anti-church policies of France). From 1874 to 1890 she had mystical experiences and visions of purgatory , which she wrote down. These were widely used in many languages by the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Good Death . After the dissolution of the monastery, Sr. Marie temporarily lived with her cousin in Vauvicard ; then she became sacristan of the chapel of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Cherbourg. For this chapel she received personal permission from Pope Pius X for the permanent exposure of the Holy of Holies .
