Marieke Schroeder (born December 23, 1970 in Regensburg ) is a German film director, screenwriter and film producer.

Life

Schroeder grew up in Regensburg. She initially planned to become a foreign correspondent and therefore studied communication sciences in Munich. She did internships at television stations and wrote her master's thesis on film propaganda for the German Fleet Association from 1901 to 1907 . She became increasingly interested in film production and took part in a four-month “Intensive Film Program” at New York University . She then became an assistant director to Jan Schmidt-Garre , who shot a 13-part series about tenors, which involved traveling around the world. Schroeder shot some of the films himself. Her first independent directing project was a 45-minute documentary about Sinai for the ARD series “20 Days in the 20th Century” (1999). This job had been arranged for her by Thomas Hausner , for whom she had previously worked as an assistant director. More documentaries followed. Among other things, Schroeder produced the portrait film A Woman and a Half: Hildegard Knef , which ran at the Berlinale in 2001 and was nominated for the German Film Prize. Schroeder used material from the shooting for a coffee table book about Hildegard Knef, which she published in 2003. In 2012 she produced Schmidt-Garre's yoga documentary The Breathing God . With Charles Schumann she visited well-known bars for two months, for example in Tokyo and Havana; this resulted in the documentary Schumann's Bar Talks in 2017 .

Schroeder is married, has three children and lives in Munich.
