The image of the Virgin Mary in the Haßfurt Gorge is a pilgrimage destination of the Catholic community of Meiningen in the south of Thuringia . There was once a Lady Chapel here , which was modeled on a medieval path chapel .

location

The image of Mary is located in the forest area "Hassfurt" in the western city forest of Meiningen on the "old Frankfurter Straße" organized by Haßfurtgrund near the Schloss Landsberg by Haßfurtschlucht the Thirty Ackerer leads plateau. This former medieval trade route led to Gotha , Fulda , Frankfurt am Main and Würzburg . Not far, on a high rock spur above the gorge, lies the Habichtsburg castle ruins .

Image of Mary

The term "Marienbild" used today is associated with the central relief on the shell limestone wall. The sandstone relief that was once attached to the south wall of the chapel was created by the sculptor August Müller. The chapel stood in a grotto that was blown up in the 19th century, and the image of Mary is attached to the western rock face of the grotto. It was renewed in 2005. Services are held here every year in May.
