As Marie Lent or fasting before Dormition Dormition ( Russian Успенский пост ) is defined as the 14-day Lent as preparation time before Mary Dormition in the Eastern Churches , named after Mary , the mother of Jesus as fasting on the day of the Dormition, August 15 ends, .

In the churches that have adopted the Gregorian calendar (such as the Greek Orthodox Church ), it lasts from August 1 to 14, in the churches that celebrate the festivals according to the Julian calendar (such as the Russian Orthodox Church ), it lasts from August 14th to 27th of the Gregorian calendar. Lent ends on the day of Mary's Assumption into Heaven .

Emergence

Lent is known from the early Christian era. The Marian fast was established for Orthodox Christianity at the church council in 1166, at the time of Patriarch Luke of Constantinople .

Fasting rules

The Orthodox Church still follows the rules of the Church Fathers of the first centuries AD in its fasting rules, which were based on the ancient eating habits of the Mediterranean countries. Meat, dairy products and eggs are therefore generally prohibited during Lent. During Marian fasting, fish is only allowed on the day of the Transfiguration of the Lord , August 6th. Wine and oil are allowed on Saturdays and Sundays.

The goal and purpose of the fast

With fasting, the Orthodox Christian prepares for a great festival. Fasting should serve to purify body, mind and soul and to concentrate fully on God and the important event. During this time, the believer tries to go to church, to confession, to the Eucharist more often, to pray more every day than usual and to read spiritual literature (Bible, lives of saints, etc.).

Fasting order of the Marian fasting time

With regard to the food laws, the Orthodox churches basically know three stages of fasting:

  1. Strict fasting: A strictly vegan fast, in which no animal products are consumed apart from honey, and neither oil nor alcohol.
  2. Light fasting: Wine, oil and molluscs are allowed beyond level 1 .
  3. Fish: In addition to level 2, fish is also allowed.

Lent in the Orthodox Church

There are four multi-day fasts in the Orthodox Church:

  • The holy and great forty-day fasting period begins seven weeks before Easter and lasts until the Friday before the Saturday of Lazarus . Before that, there is the “milk week”, in which no more meat, but plenty of milk, dairy products and eggs are consumed and regional carnival customs are maintained. The fasting of Lazarus Saturday, Palm Sunday and Holy Week immediately follows the great Lent.
  • The Apostle Lent, in which a light fasting applies, lasts from the first Sunday after Pentecost to the Solemnity of Peter and Paul on June 29th.
  • The Marian fasting period, which is strictly fasted, lasts from August 1st to 14th.
  • The Nativity Fast , lasts from November 15th to Dec 24th.
