The Marienkapelle in Stein am Kocher , a district of Neuenstadt am Kocher in the district of Heilbronn in northern Baden-Württemberg , goes back to a medieval building and has been renewed several times over the years. The building, known locally as Kerchle , was given its current appearance through extensive renovation work carried out between 1999 and 2002.

history

A chapel in Stein am Kocher was first mentioned on the occasion of a property sharing agreement between the Würzburg canon Konrad von Weinsberg and his brother Engelhard in 1382, in which Konrad reserved the right to go down to the Bethuseln . In the Middle Ages and the early modern period, the chapel near Presteneck Castle was a little outside the village, which has only recently extended beyond the chapel.

In 1685, a report to the prince-elector and archbishop of Mainz stated that alms money from a foundation made by benevolent citizens infinitely years ago was given out annually on Good Friday in the chapel in Stein .

In the years from 1748 to 1750 the ruined chapel was rebuilt in its current form and included in the fortifications at Prestenecker Tor . In 1904/05, the building was repaired, the financing of which can largely be traced back to a vow made by the Horch and Vogt families after the accident-free process of logging work. An extensive renovation took place in 1937/38.

In the last days of World War II , the chapel caught fire on April 9, 1945 due to flying sparks after the place was bombarded by American artillery and was largely destroyed. Before the burning roof structure collapsed, numerous sacred objects were recovered. In May 1946 the chapel received a new floor and an emergency roof. Parts of human skeletons were found while working on the floor. For the time being, the chapel was no longer used sacred, but rather served as a storage room.

A comprehensive renovation of the building took place from 1999 to 2002, whereby only the floor and the foundation walls were preserved. Instead of the post-war emergency roof, the chapel received a new roof structure with a turret and was newly plastered inside and out, and the building was given a new ceiling and new chairs. The renovated chapel was consecrated on September 28, 2002.
