The Arnstadt Marienstift is a specialist hospital for orthopedics and anesthesiology based in Arnstadt , Thuringia . It is also the academic teaching hospital of the University of Jena .

history

The history of today's Marienstift begins even before the actual hospital was established in 1925 with the establishment of the Marienstift Foundation by the local committee of the Association for Cripple Welfare in Thuringia and the Consistorial Councilor Emil Petri in 1904. On April 4, 1905, the healing and care took place - and educational institute for educable cripples under the supervision of the director Emil Petri, but initially as a school and vocational training center in the "old house". In 1914, a craftsman's house was built, which was followed by the first extension. The actual establishment of an orthopedic clinic did not take place until December 22, 1925 and thus today's official opening as a hospital.

On April 1, 1930, after Petri's death, pastor Friedrich Behr took over the post of director of the Marienstift. With the appointment of Adolf Hitler as head of state of the German Reich and the associated consequences of euthanasia and the debate about “life unworthy of life”, the institution saw itself increasingly threatened by the Nazi state. Nevertheless, the hospital was partially turned into a military hospital in 1939 , but remained in existence without any further restrictions until the end of the Nazi era. The “Old House” was destroyed in an Allied air raid on February 6, 1945, killing three sisters. After the end of the war and with the Soviet military administration in Germany , the hospital was dissolved as a military hospital and reopened for private patients.

The old workshop building was expanded in 1951 to become a temporary orthopedic children's home with a special school. In 1952 a barrack was converted into a church hall, equipped with an altar by the wood sculptor Friedrich Popp, who was also in charge of physiotherapy in the Marienstift. With the death of the previous director on August 4, 1958, his son, Pastor Heinrich Behr, succeeded him as director. After construction began in 1969, the orthopedic nursing home began its work in a new building on January 28, 1972, which was financed by donations from West German partner churches. On July 1, 1990, the Arnstadt Marienstift joined the Evangelical Hospital Association. V. “, on September 15th the position was replaced from Director Behr to Pastor Jürgen Friedrich. On March 19, 1999, the foundation stone was laid for a new building for the orthopedic clinic; a year later, patients and staff moved into the first areas of the new hospital.

The clinic expanded its range of services in November 2001 with a center for physiotherapy and medical training therapy . In 2003, the second construction phase of the new orthopedic clinic was inaugurated, and in 2004, 50 percent of the shares in the Sophien and Hufeland Clinic Weimar were taken over .
