Marija Wolodymyriwna Schtscherbyna ( Ukrainian Марія Володимирівна Щербина , Russian Мария Владимировна Щербина Marija Vladimirovna Shcherbina , English transcription Mariya Shcherbina; * 11. December 1958 in Kharkiv , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian mathematical physicist.

Shcherbina studied mathematics at the Kharkiv State University from 1976, graduating in 1981, and was awarded a doctorate in 1986 at the Institute of Low Temperature Physics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kharkiv (some asymptotic problems in statistical physics) and in 1997 he received his habilitation (doctorate in the Russian system) with a habilitation Problems of molecular field theory in statistical mechanics and theory of random matrices. She has been at the Institute for Low Temperature Physics since 1983, from 1991 as Senior Research Fellow and from 2000 as Senior Scientist and from 2003 as Head of Department.

It deals with mathematical problems in statistical physics, neural networks and spin glasses as well as the theory of random matrices and their spectra.

In 1997 she and Leonid Pastur proved the universality of the local eigenvalue statistics of a class of unitary random matrices. That was one of the first university results for random matrices.

She was visiting scholar at the University of Paris VII , the University of La Sapienza in Rome and the Ruhr University in Bochum .

In 2004 she was invited speaker at the European Congress of Mathematicians in Stockholm and she is invited speaker at the 2018 International Congress of Mathematicians in Rio de Janeiro .

She is married and has two kids.
