Maria Temryukovna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marija Temryukovna of Cherkessia ( Russian Мария Темрюковна ; * approx. 1544 ; † September 1, 1569 in Alexandrov ) was a Circassian princess and since her marriage to Ivan IV Tsarina of Russia .

Life

Marija Temryukovna (née Kutschenei , Кученей ) was born as the daughter of the Circassian prince Temryuk. Marija was known for her extraordinary beauty and was introduced to Ivan IV after the death of his first wife Anastasija Romanovna in Moscow in 1561 . The Tsar was so enraptured by Marija's beauty that, despite all objections, he immediately decided to marry the Circassian princess. The marriage took place on August 21, 1561 in the Cathedral of the Annunciation .

The new wife of Ivan IV accepted the Russian Orthodox faith, as was required of foreign brides of the Tsars, and was now given the name Marija. The Tsarina was described as uneducated, headstrong and vengeful and had consistently had a negative influence on Ivan IV. Apparently she did not have a moderating effect on him when he committed numerous cruel excesses. She did not speak the Russian language and only tried to learn it later. On March 21, 1563, the son of the tsarist couple, Vasily, was born, who died on May 3 of the same year. In 1569 Marija accompanied her husband on a trip to Vologda , where she fell ill. The tsar heard about an alleged plot in Novgorod and quickly went back to Moscow. The boyar Basmanov was supposed to guide Marija back, but she died on the way in Alexandrov on September 1, 1569 at the age of only 25, probably as a result of a natural illness. The rumors that she succumbed to poisoning should not be true.
