Marijan Jošt

Marijan Jošt (born May 9, 1940 in Ptuj , Yugoslavia ; † December 21, 2021 in Koprivnica , Croatia ) was a Yugoslav or Croatian agricultural scientist and geneticist .

Life

Marijan Jošt first studied at the Agricultural Institute of the University of Zagreb in Križevci , which has continued to exist since its spin-off as Visoko gospodarsko učilište in 1998 , then agronomy , genetics and plant breeding at the Agricultural Faculty of the University of Zagreb, where he received his doctorate in 1973 and then worked as a scientist until 1984 was. In 1976/77 he had a research stay at the seed company Pioneer Hi-Bred in Hutchinson (Kansas) .

From 1985 he was Professor of Plant Breeding and Seed Production at the Agricultural Institute in Križevci. He bred several high quality varieties of winter wheat . In the 1990s he founded the seed research company Jost Seed Research in Križevci . He was a proponent of organic agriculture , advocated a ban on glyphosate and wrote two books in which he dealt critically with " green genetic engineering ". He was a member of the Bioethics Commission of the Government of the Republic of Croatia.

Marijan Jošt died at the age of 81 in the Koprivnica hospital as a result of a COVID-19 infection.
