Marikana (formerly Rooikoppies ) is a place in the Northwest Province in the Bojanala Platinum District in South Africa . Marikana is east of Rustenburg .

In 2011 there were 19,522 inhabitants in Marikana and the surrounding area.
South African miners strike 2012
The place attracted more media attention in August 2012 with the so-called “Marikana massacre” by the media. After striking miners at a platinum mine owned by the Lonmin group killed two police officers and several security guards, and several days later they stormed the police armed, they opened fire. 34 miners died; it was the largest massacre in South Africa since the Sharpeville massacre in 1960. At least 44 people died in the strike in Marikana.
