The Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni ( Japanese 岩 国 飛行 場 , Iwakuni-hikōjō ) is a military airfield of the US Marine Corps , which is located in the delta of the Nishiki River on the premises of the city of Iwakuni in the Japanese prefecture of Yamaguchi . The base takes up about two thirds of the delta enclosed by the river. His ICAO code is RJOI.
About 2,900 soldiers are stationed on the base. It is home to the US Navy's 12th Fighter Wing (Battalion) , which operates the F / A-18 .
At the moment (as of 2007) a landfill project is running that is to create 790 hectares of new land. The runways of the airbase are to be relocated to this area so that the city can grow as the area that is now being used is free and the noise pollution for the population is also reduced.
