The Marinierskazerne Savaneta is a barracks of the Royal Dutch Marine Corps Mariniers on the island of Aruba .

history

In the late 1930s, the barracks were set up in the village of Savaneta on the west coast on the former site of the refinery. Previously, the Marines and Royal Navy were housed in different locations on Aruba. On January 13, 1951, the barracks received their official name Marinierskazerne Savaneta. The barracks area covers an area of around 20 hectares, has its own port and is also the location of the coast guard. The barracks is also the training center of the Arubaanse Militie (ARUMIL), whose members do their military service there.

Since August 2013 Jan ten Hove has been in command of the barracks, who took over this position from his predecessor Edwin Hofma.

Every year on May 1st there is an open day, where the island's population can take a look at the barracks that are otherwise locked and guarded. The barracks are subordinate to the Dutch Ministry of Defense .
