Savaneta is a city on the southwest coast of the island of Aruba , about two kilometers west of San Nicolas .
history
Savaneta is the oldest city on the island. Since 1760 Savaneta with its fishing port was the capital of Aruba, and the inhabitants lived from fishing. In the eastern part of Savaneta horses and goats were also bred and aloes were grown. The name Savaneta probably comes from the Dutch colonial times in Indonesia , because in the Indonesian language Savaneta is the name for the Dutch Oranjestad. When the place was founded is not exactly verifiable.
After Fort Zoutman was built by the Dutch in 1796 and the port in Oranjestad was more accessible for larger and deeper ships, Oranjestadt became the capital.
The barracks of the Dutch Navy are now located in the city. The Marinierskazerne Savaneta is also the location of the Arubaanse Militie (ARUMIL). The coast guard ( Kustwacht Caribisch Gebied ) is stationed in the port of Saveneta . In Savaneta there is also the Aruba water sports stadium , the training facility for water sports enthusiasts of the Comité Olímpico Arubano .
Trivia
The oldest house in Aruba, a cas di torto from the 1700s, is still in Savaneta today. The original roof of the house was covered with corrugated asbestos fiber cement in the 19th century .
Demographics
The city center itself has around 2,100 inhabitants. Since Aruba is divided into eight census regions that do not have any administrative functions, other settlements such as Cura Cabi, Mabon Kavel and Pos Chikito are also included in the following figures.
