Mario Astarita

Mario Astarita (born March 12, 1896 in Naples , † November 30, 1979 ) was an Italian banker and art collector.

Life

Astarita, who came from Naples , kept his extensive collection of Greek and Roman antiquities in the Villa Astarita on Capri . His significant collection of antique vases was studied by John D. Beazley between 1955 and 1965 . Astarita gave it to Pope Paul VI in 1968 . who handed it over to the Vatican Museums , where it was displayed in the Museo Gregoriano Etrusco . He donated some of his other antiquities to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples , and he and Angelo Asterita donated a collection of paintings to the Museo di Capodimonte in 1971 . The extensive garden of Villa Astarita , 2 km from Capri's town center, was opened to the public as Parco Astarita at the end of 1997 .

John D. Beazley named the early red-figure Mario painter after him , Arthur D. Trendall the Campanian Astarita painter , and the Astarita crater , a late Corinthian vase, is also named after him .
