from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Astarita Crater is a spätkorinthisch - red-ground Kolonettenkrater referred. He is considered one of the masterpieces of the red-ground vase painting of Corinth .

In the time around 560 BC Astarita crater (height 47 cm), dated to the 4th century BC, shows the pictorial representation of Helena's reclamation by Menelaus , Odysseus and Talthybios in Troy, which is unique in Greek art, above an animal frieze . The three heroes are sitting on a staircase. Theano , priestess of the goddess Athena, approaches them with other women (Dia and Malo) in their entourage as well as a cavalcade consisting of Harmatides , Glaukos and Eurymachos (the sons of Antenor and Theano) as well as Ilioneus ,Politas and Polyphas . This equestrian procession also extends to the back of the vase. The events shown are mentioned several times in the literary ancient sources, for example in Homer. The figures are generously provided with explanatory inscriptions, which, however, are not always applicable. Goats and panthers are depicted in the lower frieze. The crater got its name from its previous owner, Mario Astarita , who donated the vase to the "Museo Gregoriano Etrusco" ( Vatican Museums ).
