Act

After the Battle of Lepanto (1571), numerous Central and Southern Europeans enslaved by the Ottomans were brought back, converted to Islam and used as galley slaves in the Turkish fleet. After the battle, the freed rowers were taken to Naples, where Archbishop Mario Carafa and his Vicar General Pietro Dusina formed the Inquisition Tribunal , which questioned those affected and decided on their possible heresy . There is no known case in which the tribunal had refused the “reconciliation” (reconciliation) with the Catholic Church to the galley slaves; all were allowed to either return to their homeland or begin a new life as Christians.
