Mario Donati

Mario Donati (born February 24, 1879 in Modena , † January 21, 1946 in Milan ) was an Italian surgeon .

Life

Donati studied medicine at the University of Modena . In 1901 he received his doctorate from the University of Turin , where he worked at the surgical clinic . After various activities as a lecturer in Turin, Donati held a professorship for surgical pathology at the University of Cagliari from 1912 to 1913 . He then went to Morena, where he was professor of surgery from 1916 to 1922. He took part in the First World War as an officer, most recently with the rank of lieutenant colonel . After his years in Modena, he held the chair of surgery at the Universities of Padua (1922–1927), Turin (1927–1932) and Milan (1932–1938).

With the anti-Jewish racial legislation of 1938 in fascist Italy , Donati was removed from his chair. He came from a Jewish family but had converted to Catholicism as an adult . Until the occupation of Italy by German troops in 1943, he worked in nursing homes, he fled because of the beginning of the deportation of Italian Jews in Switzerland .

In Switzerland, Donati stayed in Lugano until 1944 and then in Geneva , where he worked as a visiting lecturer at the university and as a teacher in an internment camp. In May 1945 he returned to Milan, where he headed the surgical department of a hospital until his death on January 21, 1946.

Act

Donati held numerous academic positions, including that of the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Modena (1923–1928) and the University of Milan (1936). In addition, he was President of the Italian Society of Surgery in 1925/26 and of the Italian Society of Orthopedics in 1926/1927. From 1923 to 1928 he was a member of the Supreme Education Council ( Consiglio nazionale della pubblica istruzione ) of the country. He was a member and founder of numerous medical societies and founded the specialist journal Archivioitaliano di chirurgia in 1919 .

The Donati suture introduced by him in 1921 is named after the surgeon .
