Mario Fantin

Mario Fantin (born May 9, 1921 in Bologna ; † July 23, 1980 ibid) was an Italian alpinist , author and documentary filmmaker .

Life

Fantin graduated in business administration in 1940 and began his activity as an alpinist after the Second World War , which he had spent as a soldier in Southeast Europe.

After taking a few mountaineering courses, he began inspecting the Alps, which he captured photographically. In addition, he was enthusiastic about the film and made numerous short films; Fantin also worked as a cameraman. In 1954 he started his first expedition outside Europe - the ascent to K2 , about which he made the documentary Italia K2 with the help of the film director Marcello Baldiand wrote a diary published a few years later. This was the beginning of a series of numerous expeditions to all continents, including 33 non-European and 20 to the Alps, about which he made 47 documentary films and published more than 20 books with numerous photographs. His best-known ventures include expeditions to the Andes , the Sahara , Equatorial Africa and Greenland .

In 1967 Fantin founded the Centro Italiano Studio Documentazione Alpinismo Extraeuropeo (CISDAE) for the further production of films and the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) to promote alpinism in Turin .

Plagued by physical and psychological problems, Fantin committed 1980 suicide . The Bologna section of the CAI was named in his honor.
