Mario Strikers Charged Football (in North America Mario Strikers Charged ) is an offshoot of the Super Mario series that was developed by Next Level Games and published by Nintendo . Mario Strikers Charged Football is the sequel to the Mario Smash Football game . Like its predecessor, it follows a similar game principle as Sega Soccer Slam , which appeared on the GameCube , the Xbox and the PlayStation 2 . It is not a serious sports game, but like all other Mario sports games only shows the basics of the actual sport. It was announced at the 2006 Games Convention. The game was the first Wii game in Europe to offer the possibility of online duels via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection .

Gameplay

A team consists of five players, including three field players, a captain and a goalkeeper. There are always 2 different teams facing each other, both of which try to accommodate a metallic soccer ball in the opponent's goal. Numerous tricks can be used for this, which, analogous to the classic Mario jump'n'runs , also include attacks on the opponent with turtle shells, banana peels, chain dogs and other items . Rules for offside, offside, etc. do not exist. An electrically charged fence acts as a barrier and prevents a side slip. If a player is thrown into this by a tackle, he is dazed for a short time. Fouls are punished with items for the opponent. There is also no standard extension. In the event of a tie, the game is decided according to the golden goal rule.

control

In contrast to many other games for Nintendo's Wii , Mario Strikers Charged Football largely dispensed with the use of motion control. Only three different actions are triggered by moving the nunchuk (item change and mega shaker) or the Wii-Remote (blood tackle).

The Wii Remote's pointer is used to block mega-shots as a goalie. (For an explanation of the mega-shots, see "Playful elements".)

All other actions are triggered by pressing buttons on the Nunchuk or Wii Remote.

Playful elements

Shots

Goals are scored with shots. Normal shots, mega and trick shots can only be fired in the opposing half. If you press the shot button in your own half, the player clears the ball by shooting the ball forward in a high arc.

If you press the shot button long enough in the form of the captain or other field player in possession of the ball, mega or trick shots are triggered.

If you start a mega-shot by the captain, a small mini-game begins in which the player has to try to stop 2 bars in 2 orange areas. In the ideal case 6 balls are then shot at high speed at the opposing goal, in the worst case these are only 3 slow balls. The opponent must now try to stop these balls as the goalkeeper using the pointer function of the Wii Remote.

When the other teammates shoot trick shots, the opposing goalkeeper is usually incapacitated or hindered, making it easier to score a goal afterwards.

Charging the ball

The ball is charged by frequent passing or faked shots. If the ball has a purple sheen and is therefore only slightly charged, the probability that it will land in the goal after a shot is lower than with a white and therefore highly charged ball.

Items

Items (also known as objects) are given to a player if one of his field players has been fouled without being in possession of the ball or if he releases the shot button shortly before a trick or mega shot is performed.

List of items :

  • (Koopa-) tanks: usually fly straight ahead and throw the player to the ground. Also appear in groups of three. However, the different colors show different properties. There are green, red (homing), blue (freezes), and spiky (more likely to ricochet off the gang) tanks
  • Banana peel: makes players slip and fall, also occurs in groups of three and five.
  • Bob-ombs: Bombs that whirl the enemy through the air also occur in groups of three and five.
  • Chain dog: attacks any enemy it can catch.
  • Mushroom: gives a player a boost in speed.
  • Star: Makes a player invulnerable for a short time and provides a speed boost. Touched opponents are momentarily dazed.

Game modes

The game offers 5 different game modes. These include the training camp, the dominance mode, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, the path to the Striker Cup and the Striker Challenges. In addition, there are the options for setting the game options and the hall of fame, in which the previous course of the game is documented.

Training camp

The training camp is a kind of tutorial. The various control and tactical tricks are learned in 10 different scenarios.

Dominance mode

Here, players can specify the difficulty (1–5), series length (1–9) and type of game (minutes: 2–5, goals: 3–10) with which they want to play and whether or not cheats are allowed. You can play 2 against 2, 1 against 1 or 3 against 1 human player. In addition, 1 to 3 human players can compete against the computer.

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection

This is an online mode. You can play point games against a random opponent or friendly games against players from your friends list. When playing against random opponents, a series of 3 games of 3 minutes each without cheats is played. The player who wins 2 games has then won that series. You get one point for every goal scored (maximum 10), 10 points for every win and 1 point for every defeat. The points are recorded in a ranking list that is reset every week. The best player of the day appears in the mode selection menu as a Mii avatar. All captains are available for this.

Friendly games behave in the same way as dominance mode, and you play them against people on your friends list. You don't get any points.

The way to the Striker Cup

Here the player has to win 3 different trophies (fire, crystal and striker cup) in a certain order. All 3 cups offer a mode with table and subsequent knockout round. Only the number and difficulty of the opponents differ here. After passing the knockout round, the defending champion must be played to win the trophy. In addition, gold boots (for the most goals of all teams) and the wall trophy (for the fewest goals against all teams) can be won per cup. These trophies unlock arenas that were already allowed to play in single player mode for dominance mode. If you win a trophy for the first time in single player mode, you get a new captain.

Striker Challenges

The player is presented with 12 different tasks (winning without conceding a goal etc.) and has to solve them with given teams. One cheat is unlocked for each solved task.

Pawns

A team consists of 1 captain, 3 teammates and 1 goalkeeper. The captain always plays in the storm. One of the teammates plays in defense and two in midfield. A different teammate can be chosen for each position. All players have 4 different attributes (movement, shooting, passing and defense) and are divided into 5 different types of players.

  • Well-balanced players offer medium values for each attribute.
  • Playmakers are quick and can pass well, but have poor defense and shooting values.
  • Defense players are fast and have good defense, but have poor passing and shooting values.
  • Strength players have good defense and shooting stats, but poor passing and movement stats.
  • Attack players have good passing and shooting values, but poor defense and movement values.

The goalkeeper by the name of Kritter is included in every team and is not interchangeable. Each player also has their own feint.

Captains

Captains each have a special item that can only be used by them. You also have the option of a mega shot.

  • Mario is balanced and has "Super Mario" as the captain's item, which makes him grow and therefore almost invulnerable to tackles and slides. In addition, his shot values increase. If it starts a mega-shot, it shrinks and becomes vulnerable again. His feint is an evasive step.
  • Luigi is balanced and has "Super Luigi" as the captain's item, which makes him grow and thus almost invulnerable to tackles and tackles. In addition, his shot values increase. If it starts a mega-shot, it shrinks and becomes vulnerable again. His feint is an evasive step.
  • Peach is a "playmaker" type. Your captain's item "still image" makes enemies in close proximity incapable of movement for a short time. With her feint, she does a somersault and thus dodges attacks from the opponent.
  • Donkey Kong is a "Strength" type. His captain's item "Thunderbolt" causes opponents to whirl around and land in electric fences. In addition, the goalkeeper briefly loses the ball and the pitch tilts to one side. He taps his chest on his feint. This knocks the opponent over if they are nearby.
  • Waluigi is of the "Defense" type. His captain's item "Wall-Luigi" ensures a briefly impenetrable wall. As a ruse, he has mastered "beaming", i. that is, it disappears briefly and reappears a few meters further in the direction of travel. The higher the charge on the ball, the further the distance that is covered.
  • Wario is of the "attack" type. His captain's item “stink bomb” creates a green cloud, which inverts the controls for players who get inside. With his feint, he jumps into the air and performs the "butt smash". This knocks the opponent over if they are nearby.
  • Bowser is a "Strength" type. His captain's item "fire breath" lets him spit fire to burn enemies with it. These then become uncontrollable. For the goalkeeper this causes burned gloves, which means that he can no longer hold onto balls. At his feint he withdraws into his armor. If an opponent touches it, it will be knocked over.
  • Yoshi is balanced. His captain's item “egg roller” turns him into an egg, and he can roll over opponents. As the only captain, Yoshi can use his tackle from a distance and does not have to touch the opponent. His feint is an evasive step.
  • Daisy is a Defense type. Your captain's item "crystal ring" knocks over opponents in close proximity and the ball out of the goalkeeper's hands. As a ruse, she has mastered "beaming", i. That is, it disappears briefly and reappears a few meters further in the direction of travel. The higher the charge on the ball, the further the distance that is covered.
  • Bowser jr. is of the "attack" type. His captain's item “ultra scream” makes opponents shrink and slow down. The goalkeeper is not affected. He jumps in the air on his feint, and when he hits the ground it knocks the enemy over if he is nearby.
  • Diddy Kong is a playmaker. His captain's item "red card" creates a cone of light and every player who gets into it is briefly removed from the field. With his feint he does a somersault and thus dodges attacks by the opponent.
  • Mutant Tyranha is of the "Strength" type. His captain's item "Dreckschleuder" makes him spit mud. In this, all players except himself move more slowly. As a feint, he stops and shakes his head. If an opponent touches it, it will be knocked over.

Teammates

  • Koopa is balanced. His trick shot "Powerpanzer" envelops the ball in clay and stuns the goalkeeper. The ball bounces away from the goalkeeper in any direction. A margin ensures a safe goal. His feint is an evasive step.
  • Toad is a playmaker. His trick shot "fire meteor" burns the goalkeeper's gloves so that he can no longer hold onto balls. If he hits a player with it, he becomes uncontrollable. Occasionally a goal can be scored directly with it. With his feint he does a somersault and thus dodges attacks by the opponent.
  • Bone Dry is of the Defense type. His trick shot "Shocker" stuns the goalkeeper with an electric shock. The ball then flies straight back to him. A margin ensures a safe goal. As a ruse he has mastered "beaming", i. that is, it disappears briefly and reappears a few meters further in the direction of travel. The higher the charge on the ball, the further the distance that is covered.
  • Monty Mole is a "Strength" type. His trick shot "tunnel drill" lets him dig through to the goalkeeper. At the right distance, he stuns it and scores a safe goal. He digs himself in as a ruse. If he comes up from the earth again and a player is nearby, he will be knocked over
  • Birdo is of the "strength" type. Her trick shot "Extreme Egg" wraps the ball in an egg, which knocks the goalkeeper over and goes straight into the goal. However, no player may be in the trajectory of the ball. As a feint, it turns. If a player touches it, he will be knocked over.
  • The hammer brother is of the "attack" type. His trick shot "hammer throw" stuns the goalkeeper and player with hammers that are in the trajectory of the ball. Then he shoots automatically. This makes for a safe goal when the trick shot is used at the correct distance. As a feint, the hammer brother hammers in one direction. If there is an enemy nearby, it will be stunned.
  • Shy Guy is balanced. His trick shot "Kugelwilli bomb" lets him ride a Kugelwilli towards the goal. If he hits the goalkeeper, the ball Willi explodes and stuns the goalkeeper and players who are nearby. However, Shy Guy comes to first and can therefore shoot into the goal without resistance. As a ruse he has mastered the evasive step.
  • Buu Huu is a "playmaker" type. With his trick shot he envelops the ball and flies with it through the goalkeeper into the goal. At the right distance, this is a safe gate. As a feint, he beams himself. However, in contrast to Waluigi, Daisy and Knochtrocken, regardless of the load of the ball, always over the same short distance. He also needs a certain amount of time to perform the feint again.

Stages

There are 17 stadiums in total. 10 new stadiums and 7 taken over from the previous one, which are marked as classic in the game.

Basically there are stadiums with and without stadium events. Stadium events make the game more hectic and sometimes a matter of luck, which is why they are not used in official tournaments of the Consoles Sports League .

On the storm island, for example, cows fly across the playing field and pull players down into the depths. The situation is similarly hectic at other stadiums with stadium events (thunderstorm island, desert crypt, lava pit, wasteland, crystal canyon and storm ship stadium).

However, the stages also differ in their surface. Depending on the stadium, this ensures an increased or decreased passing speed. There are basically three interfaces with different speeds.

  • Slow surface (mostly grass): mushroom stadium, crater arena, castle garden and mud hole
  • Normal surface (mostly stone): Storm Island, Wasteland, Storm Ship Stadium, Asteroid Stadium, Battlefield, Konga Arena, Tube Arena and Underworld Arena
  • Fast surface (rubber & stone): desert crypt, classroom, lava pit, crystal canyon and Bowser arena
