Mario Thevis

Mario Thevis (born May 15, 1973 in Aachen ) is a German chemist , sports scientist and university professor .

Life

After graduating from high school in Stolberg in 1992 , Thevis studied chemistry from 1992 to 1997 at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen and from 1993 to 1998 sports science at the German Sport University Cologne (DSHS). In 2001 he completed his doctoral thesis in biochemistry and then spent a research stay at the University of California, Los Angeles in the United States . In 2004 Thevis submitted his habilitation, and in 2006 he took up the professorship for preventive doping research at the German Sport University Cologne. He is a member of the expert group for the further development of the Prohibited List of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

In 2009 he presented a verification procedure for the drug S107, which can also be used as a doping agent in sports. Regarding the fight against doping, Thevis said in 2012: "I consider it an illusion that we are completely exempting sport from doping, but the loopholes are getting smaller and smaller due to the constantly improving control options."

In 2010 Thevis took over the position of editor-in-chief of the trade journal "Testing & Analysis". In 2017 he became head of the Institute for Biochemistry at the German Sport University, succeeding Wilhelm Schänzer . In December 2018 he was awarded the North Rhine-Westphalian state prize “Sport and Science” in the “Life Sciences” category.

Thevis' main research interests include the development of new detection methods for doping analysis.
