Marit Söderström was initially active in the boat classes Europe and Laser Radial and became multiple world champion in both . In 1978, 1979 and 1981 she won the title in Europe and in 1980 and 1985 in Laser Radial. In 1982 and 1983 she was also European Champion in the Laser Radial. At the end of the 1980s she switched to the 470 dinghy and with Birgitta Bengtsson secured the world title in Haifa . With Bengtsson she then competed at the Olympic Games in Athens in 1988 , where they won the silver medal in the women's team. With 40 points, they finished second behind the US and ahead of the Soviet boat.
