Mark Blyth

Mark McGann Blyth (born September 29, 1967 ) is a Scottish political scientist. He is Professor of International Political Economy in the Department of Political Science at Brown University . He became popular with the general public through his work Austerity. The History of a Dangerous Idea (2013), which was voted Best Book of 2013 by the Financial Times .

Life

Blyth grew up in poor circumstances in Dundee , Scotland, as a half-orphan with his grandmother. He received his doctorate in political science from Columbia University in 1999 and taught at Johns Hopkins University from 1997–2009 . He describes himself as "a child of the [British] welfare state", which has allowed him to "study and become a professor at an Ivy League university in the USA".

The History of a Dangerous Idea (Oxford University Press, 2013) looks at the causes of the European financial crisis by critically examining austerity as a supposed means of crisis management.
